Travelling to Polynesia without breaking the bank

Travelling to French Polynesia without breaking the bank

The biggest expense is almost always the plane ticket, then accommodation. Here is how to cut the rest.

1. Accommodation

Choose family guesthouses and small bungalows: breakfast is often included, and some guesthouses have a shared kitchen or offer inexpensive meals. Holiday rentals with a kitchen let you cook for yourself.

2. Meals

The roulottes of Papeete and local snacks serve generous meals for much less than a hotel restaurant. Cooking some of your meals quickly makes a difference.

3. Transport and islands

Tahiti and Moorea (by ferry, a short crossing) can be visited without necessarily renting a car for the whole stay. Comparing inter-island passes before booking can also save money.

4. Season

Outside the high season, accommodation and flight prices are often lower. Always check current prices before booking.

Prices change: always compare up-to-date rates with hosts and airlines before booking.
