Best time to visit French Polynesia on a budget

French Polynesia has two broad seasons, and your budget depends on both the weather and the calendar. Here is how to choose.

This is general guidance. Weather varies from year to year, and prices change with demand.

The two seasons

  • Dry season (roughly May to October): cooler, less humid, more sunshine. This is the most popular period for visitors, and prices can be higher around July and August.
  • Wet season (roughly November to April): warmer and more humid with more rain, but also more affordable at times, and still plenty of sunny days.

Shoulder months can be the sweet spot

The months at the edges of the seasons, such as May and the autumn months, can combine decent weather and lower prices. They are often a good compromise for a small budget.

Watch the peak periods

  • Local and school holidays, and the July Heiva festival period, can fill guesthouses and raise prices.
  • Book early for the busiest weeks, especially on small islands with few rooms.

Whale season

Humpback whales visit the waters around some islands in the southern winter, roughly from July to October. If whale watching matters to you, plan around it and compare shared excursions.

How to save whichever month you choose

  • Be flexible on dates when you search for flights.
  • Stay in a family guesthouse rather than a resort.
  • Ask hosts about low-season rates and longer-stay discounts.
