The cheapest islands in French Polynesia, and how to combine them

All of French Polynesia is far from anywhere, but islands differ a lot in cost and in how easy they are to reach. If your budget is limited, choose your islands with care.

This is general guidance, not a price list. Conditions change, so check current details with each host.

Tahiti: the gateway, and a good base

Every international flight lands on Tahiti. Tahiti has the widest choice of guesthouses, supermarkets and roulottes, plus free sights: Papeete market, waterfalls and gardens. You can also use it as a base for the ferry to Moorea.

Moorea: the easy second island

Moorea is a short ferry ride from Papeete, so you avoid a domestic flight. It has family guesthouses, snacks, public beaches and a famous viewpoint, and you can explore by bike or scooter.

Huahine, Raiatea and Taha’a: quieter and good value

Huahine, Raiatea and Taha’a have a village feel and a growing number of small guesthouses. Raiatea has the Taputapuatea marae, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Taha’a is known for vanilla and pearl farms. They need a domestic flight or a boat connection, so count that cost.

Bora Bora: expensive reputation, but not closed to small budgets

Bora Bora is famous for luxury, yet it also has guesthouses and snacks around Matira, whose beach is public and free. Stay in a pension rather than a resort and Bora Bora becomes possible for a short stay.

The atolls: Rangiroa, Fakarava, Tikehau

Rangiroa, Fakarava and Tikehau are magical for snorkelling and lagoons. Food is brought in from elsewhere, so many guesthouses sell half-board packages. Stays are often more expensive per day than on Tahiti or Moorea, but staying in a guesthouse keeps it manageable.

The Marquesas

The Marquesas Islands are wild, rugged and far away. They are rewarding but not the cheapest option because of the distance.

How to combine islands without wrecking your budget

  • Fewer islands, longer stays: two or three islands is plenty for a first trip.
  • Start with Tahiti and Moorea, which are linked by an inexpensive ferry.
  • Compare domestic flight passes against single tickets when you plan several flights.
  • Check what your guesthouse includes: breakfast, transfers, snorkelling gear, kayaks.
