Family guesthouses (pensions de famille): the budget way to sleep in Polynesia

A pension de famille is a small guesthouse run by a local family. It is the most popular way to travel French Polynesia without paying resort prices, and often the most memorable. Browse our family guesthouses island by island.

Prices in this article are indicative ranges to help you plan. They change with the season and the provider, so always check current rates directly before you book. The Pacific franc (XPF) is pegged to the euro at roughly 119 XPF for 1 €.

What you get

  • A simple room, bungalow or small house, often in a garden or by the lagoon.
  • Frequently breakfast, sometimes dinner on request.
  • Local advice: the best snorkelling spot, the next boat, where to buy cheap fruit.
  • Sometimes a shared kitchen, free kayaks or snorkelling gear.

What to check before booking

  • Location: beachfront, village centre, or inland? A quiet spot may mean you need a bicycle or scooter to get to shops and snacks.
  • What is included: breakfast, airport or ferry transfer, linen, air conditioning.
  • Kitchen access: cooking some meals is one of the easiest savings.
  • Payment and cancellation: many small places prefer a direct message and bank transfer or cash. Ask about the cancellation rules.
  • Number of nights: some places have a minimum stay in high season.

Family guesthouse, budget hotel or camping?

A guesthouse is best if you want local contact and a lagoon at the door. A budget hotel may suit you if you arrive late or leave early. Camping and very cheap lodging gives the lowest nightly price if you travel light.

How we choose listings

We list places that are open, well rated by travellers and not in the luxury bracket. The information comes from public sources and the owners. Prices are not shown on the site because they change often, so always contact the host for current rates.

A practical tip

Message two or three guesthouses on the same island and compare what is included, not only the nightly rate. A cheaper room without breakfast or transfer can cost more than a slightly more expensive one that includes both.
