Free things to do in Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora
The best moments in French Polynesia are not behind a ticket desk. Beaches are public, the lagoon is open to everyone, and many of the most beautiful viewpoints and waterfalls are free. Here are ideas by island, and you will find more in our free and cheap activities list.
Access, parking and opening hours can change, and some sites close in bad weather. Check locally before you go.
Tahiti
- Papeete market: flowers, fruit, crafts and local snacks. Early morning is liveliest.
- Waterfalls and gardens: the Faarumai waterfalls on the east coast and the Vaipahi water gardens in the south are popular nature stops.
- Pā’ōfa’i Gardens: a pleasant free green space.
- Sunset on the waterfront: then dinner at the roulottes.

Other islands
On Raiatea the Taputapuatea marae is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a deeply meaningful place. On Taha’a a coral garden can be explored by snorkelling. Check each listing for details and practical access.
Respect the places
Many sites matter to local people. Do not climb on ancient stones, take only photos, and follow local advice about reefs, currents and private land.
